Traumatic Brain Injury Support

Support for TBI (mild/moderate) such as post concussion syndrome

This service is provided by Sara Soleymani-Alizadeh and is available to children, adolescents, and adults.

The support offered includes counseling for emotional well-being, cognitive assessments (for ages 3-18 only), upskilling for individuals and adults involved in the client’s life, such as caregivers or educators (in the case of children and adolescents), and collaborative development of a personalized plan. Additionally, it can involve a one-time session to provide guidance on accessing appropriate medical support or equipping individuals with the necessary medical language to advocate for themselves while navigating the medical and funding systems.

My interest in this field stems from my personal journey. In 2019, I experienced a concussion that subsequently developed into Post-concussion Syndrome, and I have since suffered from multiple concussions. In an effort to empower myself, advocate for my own healing journey, and stay up to date with the latest research, I have actively pursued various training workshops and extensively studied research studies on this topic.

Drawing upon my educational psychology background, which encompasses understanding cognitive functioning, nervous systems, and emotional well-being, as well as my ability to translate research into practical daily practices, I have been able to identify suitable support and strategies for myself. It is my deep passion to give back in this area and support those who are undergoing a life-altering journey similar to mine. In my approach, I combine my formal training with my personal experiential knowledge gained from navigating this journey myself.

  • Disclaimer: For clients in the more severe TBI category or for those seeking medical treatments, we recommend seeking a TBI clinic with more specialist medical professionals in this area.

  • This approach combines the wisdom and depth of spiritual/esoteric approaches with the practicality of western psychology and science. This is for individuals that may relate to more of a spiritual way of being but also want to do the psychological work to unpack patterns, and overall increase well being. However, it will be adapted to the style that best connects with your own values.

    • Disclaimer: For clients in the more severe mental health category (e.g., suicide, schizophrenia, and self-harm) we will recommend a clinical psychologist or psychotherapist as their scope of practice is better suited for this.

Wellbeing in Action workshop intentions and description:

Over the years, I have participated or facilitated trainings where the importance of the adult wellbeing in caring professions were emphasised. Before my role at the ministry, I came from working in an inner-city school in the U.S. for 11 years. Working within the school setting directly with a very high-risk population, I continuously sought out training and practices to intentionally work on my own wellbeing while working daily with complex trauma and high crisis situations. I naturally incorporated and merged the training I received in western psychology with my own upbringing in eastern spirituality in conversations around wellbeing. Adult wellbeing organically came up in many workshops I facilitated for other psychologists, teachers, administration, and all staff in helping professions which was a reminder of the need to create space for this. If it was running a school wide training on developmental trauma or supervising a psychologist, I saw the importance of creating space to empower, reflect and allow others to also tap into their own inner wisdom and values and weave it into their own professional practice. Even when giving information or strategies as a psychologist, I still encouraged others to only take what aligns to their values from the given information and make it experiential learning that works within their own context. Continuing to be in roles of supporting interns and supervising other psychologists, learning support staff, and being in positions to run workshops and support adults who are in caring professions, I feel passionate about allocating more focused and intentional time around wellbeing. I want to support having a workforce where focus on wellbeing becomes a culture and a perspective shift, a way of being in our workplace and not just something we say is important and do occasional practices around it.

Objective: A conscious culturally safe modern psychology approach to empower adults that are in caring professions. This is a proactive and preventive approach to put in workplaces to support increasing protective factors to reduce burnout. This workshop will be delivered in a way that shares both evidence-based practices through my training, but also my own 15 years of experiential learning working with constant crisis and high-risk populations. In addition to information sharing, it also empowers the audience through activities, discussions, and reflections to pull from their own inner wisdom and connect with their own values. My intention is not to just deliver information and research but facilitate it in a way for workshop members to see their own light (Te Ira Tangata) using an immersion of science and spirituality while respecting everyone’s context and values they bring into the workshop. Follow up small group sessions will be a space holder to support their inner transformational journey into empowerment. After our “wellbeing in action” sessions my intention is to have created a self-managed support group that can continue without me if you choose to do so. This will be a work whanau community of support focused on wellbeing vs. just social groups or supervision groups. My hope is for this program to reduce compassion fatigue, burnout, and support with staff retention.

Target audience: All adults who are in caring professions. I would especially recommend those in their first 3 years of career to go through this program as they are exploring their professional identity. The program can easily be adapted to staff working caring professions including managers, leaders, educators, those in mental health professions, first responders, health care professionals, etc.

Duration: I recommend 6 sessions to allow for deep and meaningful discussions with more individualized attention. These small group sessions can follow a full day workshop on this topic or if you prefer small group interactive settings it can be purchased separately as one-off sessions or a package deal. I’m flexible to adapt to your context. Just ask =)
